ARTEMIS - AI-based miniaturized integration of real-time atrial fibrillation detection.

Atrial fibrillation (AFiB) is one of the most widespread diseases in Germany, affecting almost two million people. Long-term ECG recorders are used to monitor cardiac patients, which are uncomfortable for the patient and whose data are only evaluated afterwards.  Early intervention could prevent severe effects like stroke. 

The aim of ARTEMIS project is the research and develiopment of efficient, digital healthcare for this clinical picture in order to achieve early detection of atrial fibrillation. In this way, a severe deterioration in patient health, increased medical care costs and financial treatment costs are to be avoided. 

The main innovation of the ARTEMIS project is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based miniaturized ECG electronics that can detect atrial fibrillation directly on the patient and in real time. Through the, in a semiconductor circuit (ASIC) - and software established AI data analysis, critical changes in the ECG are detected. The results are quickly and securely transmitted to the telemedicine center (TMC) using the 5G standard and transferred to the electronic patient record. 

The "AI" supports by analyzing and processing large amounts of data and providing decision support. Based on the pre-analysis of the patient data, the medical staff in the TMC is alerted at an early stage to a potentially life-threatening situation and can intervene accordingly. The project results will contribute to a relevant relief of the medical staff in this area. 

The feasibility of specific detection of cardiac arrhythmias using machine learning has already been scientifically demonstrated. A particularly small and inconspicuous monitoring system increases the comfort and acceptance of the patient and thus the scope and validity of the measurement data. 

The consortium includes experienced distributors, manufacturers as well as medical care providers who will ensure a targeted exploitation after the three years of research.
